OBESITY SURGERY

Obesity surgery (Bariatric surgery) includes a wide range of surgical techniques aimed at definitively treating the condition. Obesity is undoubtedly a scourge of the era, with ever-increasing incidence rates.

Although the causes of obesity vary, some of the most common ones include:

      • lifestyle
      • incorect eating habits
      • lack of exercise.
      • People who prefer foods high in fat or sugar
      • have no physical activity and are accustomed to sleeping a few hours

However, in some cases, hereditary predisposition or various coexisting diseases, contribute significantly to the occurrence of obesity.

Obesity is now a recognized disease, which has an impact in many areas, as it affects not only the external appearance of the individual, but also his psychology and social life. In any case, it is a disease that needs special attention, while in the majority of cases, surgical treatment is the only way to achieve a definitive result.

    Conservative Forms of Obesity Management

All obese people initially resort to conservative forms of treatment . This requires lifestyle changes and often leads to exhausting diets and endless hours in the gym. This conservative approach, usually  does not offer lasting long-term results. In any case, the diagnosis and an individualized treatment plan are essential elements for the definitive treatment of the disease.

When is surgical treatment of obesity necessary?

When the body mass index exceeds certain limits and / or specific diseases appear that accompany obesity, surgical treatment is considered necessary.

Today, obesity surgery includes modern surgical techniques, which provide a solution even in very severe cases. The use of minimally invasive surgery is fully applicable in the field of obesity, significantly reducing the surgical trauma, minimizing the recovery period and reducing the risk of complications.

Surgical techniques to treat obesity are constantly evolving, while different options are offered depending on the case. A specialized general surgeon can guide you appropriately in this choice, analyzing the procedure, the postoperative course and the final result of each technique.

    Obesity Surgery – Techniques

Modern surgical techniques for the treatment of obesity include:

        1. Gastric plication: It is a relatively new operation for the treatment of obesity, in which no part of the stomach is removed. Instead, the stomach is folded, with the aim of reducing its capacity and thus limiting food intake.
        2. Gastric sleeve: This technique is performed laparoscopically or robotically, by removing a large part of the stomach (up to 85%) elongated, to limit food intake.
        3. Gastric bypass: During this operation, a laparoscopic or robotic creation of a small gastric pocket is received that receives food and bypasses the initial part of the small intestine, in order to limit the absorption of calories.
        4. Gastric bypass of one anastomosis (mini gastric bypass): It is one of the most promising techniques in the treatment of obesity. With a laparoscopic or robotic approach, the capacity of the stomach is reduced by creating an elongated gastric pocket. The small intestine is bypassed and anastomosed more peripherally, in order for food to enter directly into the small intestine.
        5. Biliopancreatic diversion: This technique is classified as a purely malabsorption type. Although it is extremely effective in weight loss, it carries the risk of distant metabolic complications, making strict postoperative monitoring necessary.
        6. Obesity reoperations: In some cases, especially when the results of a previous obesity operation were unsatisfactory or complications (eg old gastric banding), reoperation is recommended, based on the causes of failure of the first operation and the particular characteristics of the patient.
